P4/3 Curriculum Newsletter Term 3 Feb 19

     

Religious Education 

Primary 3 will be continuing to take their final steps in preparation for their reconciliation
this term. We would encourage supporting your child by completing any follow up homework
issued after the class lessons. Thank you for your support with the homework tasks and
attendance at mass.

Primary 4 will be beginning to take their next steps in the coming weeks to prepare for their
First Holy Communion. We would encourage supporting your child by completing any
follow up homework issues after the lessons during class time.

Literacy

In Phonics Primary 3 will be continuing to complete a revision block of sounds previously
learned. The children will learn new sounds weekly and we would encourage practise of
these at home. Primary 4 have also been learning new sounds weekly and again we would
encourage you to reinforce practise of these sounds at home.

This term the children will be looking at different styles of texts including fiction and non-fiction
texts. We will be looking at note taking and different ways to record notes. Primary 4 children
will then go on to looking at how they can use their notes to enhance their own piece of writing
including the relevant information. There will be lots of opportunities to explore different styles
of texts throughout the term and the children will be able to discuss their favourite styles of text
with their classmates through lots of class discussion points.

We will all continue to work on reciprocal reading strategies; predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising. We use these strategies daily in class and your child should try to use them at home to support their reading. I would ask to encourage all children to read for enjoyment at home as it has many benefits including their self-confidence as a reader.

Numeracy

This term the children of P4/3 will be developing their understanding of multiplication and
division.

Primary 3 will be working on multiplying starting with multiplying by 2. They will be introduced
different methods and models to support their understanding of this. They will then be
introduced to sharing between 2 and again will be supported by different teaching methods
to help develop their understanding of division.

Primary 4 will continue to work on their times tables throughout this term. You can support
your child with this at home by encouraging them to practise their times tables orally or
written throughout the week. Primary 4 will also be introduced to written multiplication.
We will be focusing on multiplying a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. (e.g. 43 x 6= )
The children will also be introduced to different methods and models to help with their
understanding of multiplication and division. Primary 4 will use these methods and models
to develop their knowledge of the relationship between multiplication and division.

Interdisciplinary Learning 

This term the class will be learning all about different birds in the lead up to a small
technology challenge of building their own bird feeder. The children will be given the
opportunity to take part in some outdoor learning including bird watching and recording
their findings as well as creative activities such as bird sketching and painting.

Reminders

Just a little reminder that we have PE on a Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that your
child comes to school wearing a polo shirt and brings shorts ) if your child is in primary 3),
or a full P.E kit if your child is in Primary 4, to allow them to participate in our lessons,

jewellery should also be removed.

Please remember to provide your child with a water bottle to ensure that they have
access to a drink throughout the day.

Please note homework will be issued on a Monday and should be returned on a
Thursday each week. 

Term 3 Primary 4 2018-2019

In Literacy, the Unit Study for Primary 4 for this term is the Worst Witch by Jill Murphy.

This term, the children will be looking at different styles of texts including fiction and non-fiction. There will be lots of opportunities to explore different types of texts. They will begin to learn the skill of note taking; scanning a passage/piece of text to find the information required. Later in the term they go on to look at how they can use their notes to enhance their own piece of writing. Our grammar focus this term prepositions, sentence construction, questioning, verbs and adverbs through our novel study and a range of other texts. The children are continuing to be encouraged to use a dictionary and thesaurus during writing lessons. High expectation is expected of children with all written tasks both at home and at school. Last term, the children learned to join their handwriting and are encouraged this term, to use cursive handwriting in all written tasks.

In Numeracy and Maths, the children will also be introduced to the concept of division and fractions and will be reinforcing skills already taught in addition, subtraction and multiplication. Within money the children are using a variety of monies to purchase items. We ask that you would encourage your child at home to use money to buy items and receive change in a real life context. Later on in this term our focus will be place value and continuing to develop an understanding of numbers to 1,000.

                             

In our Interdisciplinary Learning ‘Lego League’, it will focus our learning around developing our technology/ Literacy and Numeracy skills. We will soon be sharing how we are using Lego in our classroom and our exciting technology challenges with you.

   

In partnership with our Parish, we are continuing to prepare the children for First Holy Communion. Thank for joining and supporting us for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception last term. I'm sure you'll agree the children were amazing. Our next focus is fundraising for HCPT. We look forward to seeing you at the HCPT mass in St. Patrick’s Church (details to follow).

Please ensure your child has full PE kit and all jewellery removed before coming to school.
